Description
Arthur Fiedler conducted the Boston Pops Orchestra to worldwide fame and into the hearts of Bostonians with his outdoor summer concerts at the Hatch Shell. Here, complete with howitzer cannonfire, church bells ringing in Beacon Hill and fireworks exploding over the Charles River, he brought Tchaikovskys 1812 to life for the 4th of July. Today his memorial a modernistic statue of his head sits by the base of a footbridge that crosses Storrow Lagoon. On this night, his head looks small to the right of the bridge, spotlighted by an overhead streetlight, backlit by the golden glow of sundown, but he still has the magic to make light and color explode into the darkness of the Esplanade.
