Growing up in the Serengeti is hard work. Even for those at the top of the food chain. But unlike most wild cats who lead solitary lives, lions are social creatures who live in prides. And having pride mates can - literally and figuratively - provide a nice cushion against the harsh challenges of life on the African plains.
