Description
When the heat of day subsides and in its place darkness spills over the landscape, a different world comes to life in the Tanzanian bush. I've gotten used to hearing sounds "that go bump in the night" from the safety of camp but since Manyara Ranch is a private conservancy, not bound to national park rules, they can offer the rare chance for a night drive in Tanzania. So after a sumptuous dinner, we climb onto an open-air safari vehicle, equipped with a handheld spotlight to scan the darkness for the telltale flicker of reflected light known as eyeshine. We see savanna hare, springhare, jackal, dikdik, genet before finding and following lionesses unsuccessfully stalking waterbuck. By now it's almost midnight so Charles, our guide, takes a shortcut to head us back toward camp. Maneuvering around bushes and rocks, through the grass, Charles brings us face to face to a truly rare and exciting sight - a pair of striped hyena brothers. At 7 months and deeply nocturnal, they're old enough to leave the den but young enough to enjoy a spirited round of play-fighting before chasing each other back into the African night.
