Artist's Description

Mid to late March is usually the peak of the Sandhill Crane migration in the Platte River Valley. That's when 80% of the world's population of Sandhills is drawn to this area to rest and feed before continuing to nesting grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia. When we arrived March 22nd, they were counting 142,000 Sandhills in the Platte. By the time we left, numbers increased to 203,000. Morning of March 26 2015, we hid in a blind at the river's edge to wait for sunrise and the birds' daily exodus from the safety of the river to surrounding cornfields to feed. Arriving in predawn darkness we only heard the rattle of a few birds. But as light increased and birds woke to add their voices, their chorus built to a roar that sounded like a standing ovation and the morning light revealed more birds than I could possibly dream of counting.
