Description
March 26 2015 started early in the darkness of a cold morning as we tiptoed inside a Rowe Sanctuary bird blind. At the edge of the Platte River, thousands of Sandhill Cranes roosted waiting for daylight. We quietly hid and waited alongside them as the sun rose into the clear crisp sky. With birds first flying off in small groups, most of the cranes seemed content to bask in the warm sunlight. Until, the distinct sound of a huge flock of Sandhills roaring in from the west started a chain reaction of wings and crane voices suddenly rising right in front of us.
