Description
We were fortunate to arrive at Multonomah Falls just as the sun slid behind the rock cliff. But the bigger stroke of luck was that we visited when we did as, exactly one week later, the Eagle Creek Fire closed the Falls and most of Oregon’s Columbia Gorge. Though fire danger has since declined and this area appears green, moss that acts as a glue holding cliffs together was burned away. Destabilized steep slopes, dangerous risk of falling rock and slides means the Falls, Lodge, trail and old highway leading to it will remain closed for the foreseeable future.
So as lucky as I was to stand at the base of these falls, look 69 feet straight up lower falls, another 542 feet to the top of upper falls, cross the bridge that spans the base of upper falls and hovers you over the brink of lower falls, I’m equally heartbroken by the devastation left in the wake of the Eagle Creek Fire.
