I love your wildlife images, especially this one. I conducted 12 camera safaris to Kenya and Tanzania and saw a few hippos during those journeys. Carl Purcell

Sylvia J Zarco replied:

Your comments are more special and appreciated since you KNOW Africa and photography. Still got a few more to go to get to 12 myself but am looking forward to my #7 in February, which will be the 4th to Tanzania. All those times, I'd only rarely seen hippos active or out of water... that is until I went to Botswana earlier this year, when hippo sightings just kept getting better. Thank You Carl!

Artist's Description

Hippos are such implausible animals. They are huge lumbering barrels with short legs, small eyes and ears and enormous mouths. Yet with that physique they can still outrun a human in "sprints" reaching up to 19 mph (30 kph). They spend most of their time in the water, yet don't really swim. They "run," bouncing off river bottoms to bob along the surface, earning them their name of "River Horse." On a continent known for deadly predators, it is this herbivore that is considered one of the most aggressive and dangerous animals in Africa. So is it any wonder, that such improbable creatures are born already sporting double-chins... and that they look awfully cute doing so.
