Excitement built with my first view of the beach at Lake Clark. As our plane circled for landing, bear dots moved in the tidal flats while a couple small clusters of photographer dots watched eagerly nearby. After lunch, we'd add our own dots to the picture. But the afternoon's rising tide kept us off the beach, turning us instead into the sedge meadow. Our guide lead us carefully, on foot, through waterlogged grasses, toward 2 juvenile bears, until they were far bigger than aerial dots. From a safe distance we each breathlessly muttered "Wow" at the bundles of fur napping before us. When one of the juveniles turned over to return our gaze, we greeted him with a happy chorus of camera clicks and he replied with a big "Hi! Welcome to Lake Clark!" bear paw wave.
