May 20 2012 the moon passed directly in front of the sun to create an annular solar eclipse. But the Moon's apparent diameter was too small to completely cover the Sun so at the height of the eclipse it created a ring, called an annulus, that is also known as a Ring of Fire.
This is a composite of photographs taken at Bryce Canyon, Utah USA, using a Canon DSLR fitted with a special black polymer solar filter. If you zoom in on the fuller images of the sun, you can see 3 distinct areas of sunspots. As the moon moved away from the sun, the sun began to sink below the horizon so that it set still in partial eclipse.
