Cliffs of rock rise 1,500 feet to form Santa Elena Canyon. See that small spot of light green in the center of this photograph, emerging from the shadows into sunshine between those vertical cliffs? Well, that is the Rio Grande, the river whose waters mark the international border between the US and Mexico. So the rock that rises on the right and the green spread of foreground is the US. The rock that rises on the left is Mexico. And these rock cliffs, built by geologic time and the flowing waters of this river, are the only walls necessary, the only walls that belong and the only walls that make any sense whatsoever amid the waters of the Rio Grande.
