He walks out of ancient First Nations legend to splash in the protected waters of Gribbell Island on the coast of British Columbia, western Canada. He is a special black bear known by many names, Ursus americanus kermodei is his scientific name. Or more commonly Kermode bear. The Tsimshion Nation of the Pacific Northwest call him Mooksgm'ol, the Spirit of the rainforest. Legend says Raven the Creator came among the black bears and turned every tenth one white to remind us of when the world was peaceful, covered with ice and snow.
That is mythology. Yet this bear does indeed live in the thick trees and clear streams of the Great Bear Rainforest. So we must remember and honor his legend. The legend of pristine Nature, peace and harmony that is Spirit Bear.
~Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia, Canada
